Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy (OT) is a healthcare profession that helps people of all ages participate in everyday activities (“occupations”) that are meaningful to them—such as self-care, work, school, play, and social life—when illness, injury, disability, or developmental challenges make those activities difficult.

What occupational therapists do

Occupational therapists (OTs) assess a person’s abilities and challenges, then create personalized strategies to improve independence and quality of life. This may include:

  • Teaching new ways to perform daily tasks

  • Strengthening physical and cognitive skills

  • Recommending adaptive equipment (e.g., splints, assistive tools)

  • Modifying the home, school, or workplace environment

  • Supporting mental health and emotional well-being
